RESIDUAL GURUS arose from the idea of creating a street show that blends quality music and gesture theatre with a component of social criticism, thus creating awareness of different issues surrounding the current world situation: interpersonal communication, economic inequality and industrial overproduction, all from a humoristic and creative viewpoint which adds a new dimension to street art.
In 2005, percussionist Ramon Rodríguez began conceptual and sonic research which led to the birth of the group GAMELAND, already with the participation of Raul Pérez and Jaume Coll. This first project was presented at different events such as the “Festival Internacional de Musicos de Calle” in Pamplona and the street theatre festival Aurillac 2007.
The desire for growth and deepening, in addition to support from XIRRIQUITEULA TEATRE in production, administration and management tasks, as well as the incorporation of Alexandre Guitart and David Sitges-Sardà, completing the artistic crew, brought this new show to life. The artistic direction was a shared task in three phases under the guidance of three directors: Adrian Schwarsztein, Miri Yeffet and Iolanda Llansó, which together with the involvement of the artists gave RESIDUAL GURUS its definitive shape.
Music is the basic core of this show, with the main source of inspiration being Carnatic percussion from South India and its rhythmic language, Konnakol. The sonority which arise from the surplus materials of industrial society (barrels, pipes and cans), together with the magic of the sounds of Bali’s Gamelan gongs, create a sound somewhere in between electronic, new age music and Brazilian drum ensembles. The combination of these elements, apparently so distant from each other, is simply a sign of the global reality that we live in, which in turn gives birth to completely original and innovative music.
From its premiere at the Fira de Teatre de Tàrrega in 2009, the show has been featured at different festivals throughout Europe, always generating a positive reaction among audiences as well as organizers, making RESIDUAL GURUS a show in continuous evolution and growth.
